The main intention for the formation of this committee is to pressure the relevant authorities in ensuring that elections in Malaysia would be free and fair.
The BERSIH committee for Pandan would strive to ensure that the people of Pandan are aware of their rights as a voter.
We would also ensure that the immediate goals of BERSIH i.e. the use of indelible ink, the cleaning up of the electoral register, fair access to the media and the abolition of postal votes would be achieved.
We would ensure that any irregularities either in the registration of voters or the voting itself on polling day would not go unpunished.
At the moment, we have discovered several irregularities that require urgent attention:
Many voters who had voted in the 2004 general election but had discovered that their names are missing from the latest electoral register. These voters would be denied of their rights if nothing were being done.
There are many voters in the electoral register who are extremely old with some over 100 years old. We fear that they had passed away and other people would be voting in their name.
There are addresses with a high number of voters registered, some up to 21 people. These addresses may have been used to register phantom voters.
There are reports from voters that they were given only 1 ballot paper during the 2004 general election.
There are also reports that the post office are not very cooperative when dealing with voters who had moved to a new address i.e. to change their voting constituency.
BERSIH for Pandan would be sending a memorandum to the Election Commission once we had fully completed our investigation.
We would also be embarking on a campaign (road show) around Pandan in order to increase public awareness.
