Isa Abu Kasim, the BN State Assemblyman for Batang Kali, in today’s Sinar Harian* (A local Malay tabloid) labeled the proposal by the Selangor government to appoint the disabled or OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya) as local government councilors as irrelevant.
According to him the OKU’s would not be able to carry out their duties as councilors as they are unable to visit their constituencies to look into the problems of the people.
Such a statement is an insult to the OKU’s and an act unbecoming of a people’s representative.
Many OKU’s despite their disabilities have performed their duties equally well if not better than most citizens without any disability. In the UK there has been a government minister that is blind.
I am sure that there are many OKU’s in Isa’s constituencies. As a leader, he should have least give them some form of encouragement rather than dismissing them as irrelevant. Isa’s act of belittling the OKU’s must not be left unpunished by society.
