A former IGP, Tun Hanif Omar, in his column “Points Of View” (Sunday Star – 3rd August 2006) commenting on several snatch theft, rape and murder cases said, “They all make us worry about letting our womenfolk and daughters walk about or even drive in public places and carparks”.
If a former IGP feels unsafe, what about common people like us?
For us in Pandan, the attack on angkasawan Dr. Faiz Khaleed on 21st November shocked us all. He was robbed in front of his house in Taman Mawar.
Many Malaysians like Dr. Faiz had become victims of serious crimes. Our country is not that safe anymore with robberies, rapes and murders being very common these days. Even small children are not being sparred.
According to a study there is a marked increase in crimes commited :-
Violent Physical Crime
2003 - 22,790
2006 - 42,343
Increment - 85.6%
Rape
2003 - 4.0 per day
2006 - 6.7 per day
Increment - 65.8%
Overall Crime Comitted
2003 - 156,315
2006 - 226,836
Increment - 45.1%
Last year I had a meeting with the then Chief Police of Ampang Jaya, ACP Azri Ahmad, and was told that our police force is under strength.
How could this be allowed to happen?
If we can pay RM500 million in commissions to an agent when buying submarines then there is no excuse for not finding the extra cash for the security of the rakyat.
This year Petronas had already paid to the government RM48.3 billion in the form of taxes, dividends, royalties and export duties. I am sure that part of the money could be used to employ more policemen.
However, if the rakyat’s security is not on Barisan Nasional’s list of priorities then money would only be spent on extravagant projects that would only benefit the cronies and not ordinary rakyat like you and me.
The only way forward is to have a strong opposition in Parliament and the State Assemblies so that the Barisan Nasional could not just bulldoze their way through everything. Or better still, let us kick them out altogether.
