POLICE URGED TO SPEND MORE TIME FIGHTING CRIME AND STAY AWAY FROM POLITICS
PANDAN JAYA, 9TH JULY 2007 : Pandan PAS chief Iskandar Abdul Samad urged the police today to spend more time fighting crimes and to stay away from politics.
Last night UMNO had attempted to disrupt the visit by PAS Vice President Haji Mohammad Sabu to Pandan by hastily organising a karaoke contest about 100 metres away.
The satay feast followed by a meet-the-people session in Pandan Jaya was almost drowned out by the karaoke speakers.
The police had failed to stop the provocation by UMNO that could potentially lead to a riot
Iskandar said that clashes could have occurred if PAS members wanting to meet Mohammad Sabu had not shown restraint.
“There were almost 30 policemen that night but they had failed to stop the provocation by UMNO that could spark a riot. A jeep loaded with members of the Light Strike Force complete with helmets, batons and shields was also spotted nearby but did nothing,” Iskandar added.
With crimes such kidnapping, rape and murder being rampant, it would be to everyone’s interest for the police to focus their attention to only fighting crimesThe police was not seen instructing the organiser to lower the volume of the speakers. The police also did not act when the volume was further turned up and caused disturbance to the neighborhood.
It was reported that some of the crowd had tried to reason things out with the karaoke’s organiser but was prevented by the police. Many felt that the police was deployed to ensure that UMNO’s plan to disrupt the visit was unhindered.
Iskandar also said that the nation had been told that the police force requires more personnel in order to efficiently fight crime therefore it is a pity that in Pandan they were being used to assist UMNO in achieving their political goals.
“With crimes such kidnapping, rape and murder being rampant, it would be to everyone’s interest for the police to focus their attention to only fighting crimes as the rakyat would rather see the police protecting the interest of the public than that of a political party,” he further added.
