GOMBAK, 5 OCT 2011 - After countless attempts to resist eviction, the remaining 29 families of former Kampung Sri Temenggong, Selayang was offered affordable housing priced at RM42,000 by the Selangor government, yesterday.
State exco for housing, building development and squatters Iskandar Samad briefed the residents in a dialogue last night, in which he said each unit of the flats will have 850sq ft of built up space.
He said the space is two times the size of the unit previously offered by the BN government in 2005, with a slightly higher price.
"Last time (the BN government) sold it at RM42000, but for the villagers could get it at RM35,000,"
"Now the selling price for these are around RM90,000, and you can get it at RM42,000," he told 30-odd villagers who attended the dialogue.
He added that market value of these flats are up to RM150,000, which is definitely a big gain for the villagers.
In spite living in the area for half a century, some 166 families of Kampung Sri Temenggong have never gotten a land permit and was labelled as squatters by the former BN state government in 2005.
Many of them took up the low-cost flats offer, and the village was torn apart to erect a concrete building.
However, the 29 families, who stayed on four parcels of lands, remain steadfast in rejecting the offer.
Following the change of government in 2008, Iskandar said the state now focuses on building medium-cost housings for the medium income group.

Villager Abdul Ayud asked Iskandar should they accept the offer, where and how will the villagers be accommodated during the construction period.
Iskandar said he plans to demolish only a less concentrated area of the village and build a block first, so the smallest number of villagers will be affected and all of them can shift in after it is completed.
Villagers Ujang Ismail wants to have everything in black and white and asked whether a change of government in the next general election will affect the promised deal.
"That's why I hope we can do it fast. If we can seal the sales and purchase document before general election then there won't be any problem," Iskandar responded.
He also said the flats can be completed in three years.
Speaking to media later, he said the state plans to build 5000 units of affordable housings in Selangor, where 450 units will be located in Kampung Sri Temenggong.
He added that the developer is yet to be confirmed but indicated there was a high chance that the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) could be taking up the project.
